Software Piracy Rate in Indonesia Still High


Business Software Alliance (BSA) together with International Data Corp.. (IDC) recently announced the results of the 7th annual study on global software piracy. The study was conducted in more than 100 countries, including Indonesia.

Between the years 2009 through 2009, an increase in installation of software without a license on a personal computer (PC) by one percent in Indonesia. This increase is making the number of pirated programs installed on your PC becomes 86%. From these results, it can be concluded that almost all people in Indonesia use pirated programs. Commercial value of illegal software is to reach USD886 million.

Value increase that occurred in Indonesia did not affect the overall level of software piracy in the Asia Pacific region. Computer software piracy rate in Asia Pacific, down from 61% in 2008 to 59% in 2009, where the commercial value of illegal software rose to over USD16.5 billion.

Despite the global economic recession, PC software piracy rate decreased in many countries, specifically decreased in 54 countries and increased only in 19 countries. The study also found that rapid growth in the number of countries with high levels of software piracy such as China, India, and Brazil, they also improved the software portion in the middle of the world software market overall. The global software piracy rate has increased from 41% to 43%.

United States, Japan, and Luxembourg is still a level of countries with the lowest software piracy on the basis of research results (respectively 20%, 21%, and 21%). Meanwhile, Georgia, Zimbabwe, and Moldova became the country with the highest piracy rate. These three countries shared a piracy rate of 90%.

To overcome the high piracy in a country, there are some tips suggested. Ways such as legalization programs offered by the software developer, a campaign conducted by the government, and education for industry, law enforcement activities, and transition technologies such as the increasing application of the management of digital rights.

Software Piracy Study covers piracy of all software that operates on a PC, including desktops, laptops and netbooks. This includes operating systems, system software, free software with a legitimate and open source software covered by the scope of research.
